Have you tried your local freecycle.org site. It's great freecycle, you can stick it on as a wanted, and who knows someone may be throwing their dishwasher on a tip (with the OK basket inside) shock horror. Or look at the Offers, someone might have put one on. Give it a try, you've got nothing to lose. Happy hunting

I'd go to my local recycling centre / tip. People take dead dishwashers there and for a couple of pounds the guys that operate the site will probably let you have a basket.
get some stiff plastic like acetate, or an OHP slide, someting like tat and cut it to the size of the inside compartments of you basket. the piece a few holes in so the water drains and bobs your mothers brother.

ohps availabe in staples.

alternatively do the same thing but use an old ice cream tub or margerine tub. the plastic is more rigid and of course free.

at least you could do this while you locate a new basket from the other excellent suggestions and you will be able to carry on using the washer.

Put them in handle end down.

if you put them in handle down then you get all sticky. Also, I think it is dangerous to have forks and knives sticking up in the air. My toddler tripped in the kitchen a few months ago and the dishwasher door was open as I was unloading it and she narrowly missed falling on the basket. Since then I have been religious about putting sharps in sharp end down. In fact it even tells you to do this in the manual.

Good thinking though and would work if you haven't got tinies walking around.

i always put my in handles down so i didnt get holes in the basket and guess what! cos kids don't like getting food on their fingers (which they have just shovelled down their throats) they DROP them in and make HOLES IN THE BASKET. Thanks for the suggestions. I have actually cut up 2 fly swats and used those bits but the water pressure makes them fly out! x
i had this problem i bought a cheap pond planting plastic basket and cut the sides off then cut it to fit the bottom of the basket and tied it on with tie wraps works a treat
The handle down thing, I did read a couple of years ago about a 15 year old lad tragically dying after tripping and falling onto a sharp knife sticking up in the open dishwasher, since then I always put mine blade down.
Those green scourers, (the flat ones not the sponges) might be a good thing to line the tray with.
