My boyfriend and I are considering getting a Bullmastiff. Does anybody know what the general character of this dog is like? Is a dog more even-tempered than a bitch, for example?

This will be a 2nd dog as my boyfriend already owns a brindle Boxer.

A mate of ours has bred them for years,he has never had any complaints about his dogs,I would imagine its the same as any dog where as people seem to have their own opinions but a lot must be down to the way they're brought up,we haven't had mastiffs but we have had rotties for years, males and females, but all of them very even-tempered.

Way back in 1980 my mum got us a puppy. It was supposed to be a bull-dog/GSD mix. It was a bull-mastiff/GSD. He was brilliant - just like scooby doo, looking like and acting like him. He ran off at every opportunity - going to the primary school to play with the kids, they all knew his name. He scaled high fences to get out of the garden. His mischief knew no bounds - but he was the biggest, softest and most trustworthy dog.

Any bull-mastiff that I have met since has just been a big soft lump of dog.

I have a cat now - evil spit-ball. Love him loads, but he is the boss.

As with all big dogs, socialisation and training is the key. They can be quite headstrong as youngsters, also read the section on exercise as it's very important!
my friend has just bought a bitch...she is a fantastic dog but god do they grow quick!!! gorgeous very friendly and despite their size very gentle.
