Do you remember customs and usages that are now no longer observed? When I was a child a death in the family was signified by the curtains or blinds being closed in the windows facing the street. And I remember following My Grandma's hearse and a policeman on "point duty" (remember those days?) stopped the traffic and saluted. Anyone have similar memories of days gone by?

Yeah....the cow thought so too, Hc...... ☺
Did you tie the cow's tail to her leg, Gness?
lardie lardie - it was thought mirrors attracted lightning strikes, so standing in front of one was dicing with death
I didn't, Psyb....she thought I was daft enough as it was....I just put up with being tail swiped if I didn't milk properly.....♣
People answering phones with - "Little Sprodwik 225"
( even if they lived and were elsewhere )

Instead of today

Responder: yeah ?
Caller : is that Little Sprodwick 225 ?
Responder : wha' if it is ? [ not saying it is mind you ]
People used to wear black arm bands too.
Thank you Peter Pedant for the info.
not putting shoes on the table(new?),not eating off 2 plates(1on top of the other),not uncrossing knives yourself if you crossed them
On a death all mirrors and pictures would be turned to face the wall.
Why blackadder?
As far as mirrors were concerned, I believe it was because it was considered vanity to admire oneself at a time of grief. I believe that this custom is still followed in Jewish households, but stand to be corrected.
Remember not being allowed to go to an aunt's funeral just 20 years ago as it was men only.
Thank you blackadder. I have never heard that before.
a candle is burnt for a week in a Jewish house post funeral, 8 days I think....
Men went to funerals, the women stayed at home to prepare the ham tea.
How many women does that take? More likely to be more deaths.
