The factor most responsible for determing that appearance is soil temperature. If the soil was warm when planted, say at least 60 degrees F., then one should see growth emerging in less than a week. If the soil temperature was perhaps only 45 degrees F., it may take 10 days to 2 weeks... this assumes appropriate moisture in both circumstances...

The potatoes usually appear after planting the seed potatoes, not before.

gen2, I took the question to refer to when the first growth of the plant would appear... ' so interpolation was used on my part...

what I wanted to know was how long before the first leaf to appear after planting the seed potatoe in the ground ,simple enough question to ask or so I thought

Like Clanad says, I think you can expect the first leaves to break through the soil surfice within the next couple of weeks, of course this is where all the earthing up begins or covering with heavy gauge black plastic sheeting to block out the light.
