I used to shut down and start up my laptop every day, but realised that I could use hibernate to turn it on and off really quickly. You should use hibernate if you have a reasonable amount of disk space free and need fast start ups/shut downs.

If you do use the hibernation setting, then you should properly shut down every few days (stretching to perhaps once a week, depending on your usage) anyway, if using Windows.
