I have found many wire rimmed round framed specs on eBay that I really like and very cheap but they don't come with lenses, would I be able to get the lenses through a local optician or online somewhere?

I think you may be confusing the majority ethnic community with the minority one.
Sorry, submitted too soon.

You need to know how the rim is made - is it welded as one piece, or is it a split rim with a screw holding it together?

If it is the former - OH says it's a definite No.

OK Mrs Chappie, I will find out. Thanks.
Overall it is cheaper to source frames and lenses from the same optician.
mrs chappie; I know nothing on the subject I admit, but if the rim is one-piece the original lens has to have been fitted in there somehow, I would suggest by heating and shrinkage, like the tyre on a wooden cartwheel.
I find it difficult to believe a lens grinder couldn't grind your lens to any reasonable shape you requested. Try your local optician or anywhere you can order specific lenses to your prescription.

So the key to buying them is look out for //Rx-able// if they are labelled as //Rx-able// they can be fitted with prescription lenses.

see here:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/48mm-Antique-Vintage-Round-Dark-Grey-Wire-Rim-Eyeglass-Frame-Spectacles-Rx-able-/151421728341?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2341703655

So I now need to find out how much it will cost to have lenses put in them.

retrotv, //Overall it is cheaper to source frames and lenses from the same optician.//

You are most likely right and that is what I would prefer to do if I can find the glasses that I like, I usually go through SpecSavers but they dont have any I like.
have you ordered them RATTER ? I like them :)

Cheap metal welded rims that cannot be opened tend have the lens bonded in at the point of manufacture, or the split rim is riveted together at the point of manufacture.

These are the "ready-made reader" type of glasses - glasses bought "off the shelf" at low cost. They are manufactured as a disposable product (basically with cheap and shoddy frame). It is not worth an optician's time and effort to attempt to reglaze these frames, as more often than not they break.

Ratter, those frames in your link look reglazeable (and should be, if they are being sold as such). OH charges a tenner for this service (edging the lens to size, and fitting) plus, of course, the cost of the lens.
Ratter I often find weird and wonderful objects in job Lots I buy for my business so I'll keep my eyes open. A few weeks ago I found an electric comb, apparently all the rage in the 1920's,the mind boggles. I have seen cases with round spectacles in before at Auctions and to answer your question -yes you can have fitted lenses to most shapes of glasses. I've just had some groovy retro 'cats eyes' glasses made into reading glasses, I went through an Independent optician, places like specsavers just won't do it.

Im not worried about looking like anybody! I actually think Dr Crippen looked fine in his specs!
I did however meet someone in town yesterday who shaved of his beard because Dave Lee Travis had a similar one, how bizarre is that!

Oh your link just takes me to Google home page by the way.
Question Author
Yep, thats the look!
