We are stripping wallpaper - without a steamer in our new home and the previous owners put wallpaper around the doorframe. It does not strip off easily with a scraper - any suggestions please for removing the old dried on paste?

Water, water and more water. You will need to wet it and allow the water to soak in and then it will come off easily. If the paper is of a vinyl type then you will need to scratch the surface to allow the water to penetrate and get to the backing and the paste.
In one of our old houses, the previous owners had used a rubber based glue to stick down some of the 'curled up edge' bits of the paper! Could that be what you are trying to scrape off? We had to use either meths or white spirit, can't remember which, to get it off with a lot of elbow grease!
have you tried scoring and then using a bit of fabric conditioner in hot water? when we stripped our paper we discovered that it had been painted many times. apart from around the radiator we just couldn't get it off! had do some creative blending with polyfiller to disguise the ridge between paper and wall in the end!
