I took my car in to get a problem fixed yesterday and the mechanic said he would order the parts that were needed, the procedure was to be done today

However yesterday i found out that another mechanic can solve the problem for a much cheaper price, the original mechanic however has told me that the parts he had to order he may not be able to send back i told him i am not paying for them if i am not using them

does the original mechanic have any rights if nothing was signed by me?

i think if you said to the first mechanic ok go ahead ,you should have stuck with him . its unfair to shop around after you agreed with him to get the parts
Find out whether he can return them first.

it was unfair yes i am just wondering if he can force me to pay
If you bought the bits from Mechanic 1 and gave them to Mechanic 2 to fit, would that be a solution?
just pay for the parts, and take them to your cheaper friend. I'd say it sounds like you had a verbal contract.
You should post in 'Legal' if you want to know the legal position.
Here in 'Chatterbank' you will be reminded of the moral position which may or may not match the legal one.
