haven't been to the butcher's for quite a while.
Toddled in yesters to get 1lb of steak mince.

Was horrified at the price, just over £4.

I swear blind it was about £3 this time last year, what sort of price do you pay for butcher meat?

(if you don't mind me being nosy)

Mrs. bb paid £6.59 a kilo for beef mince a couple of days ago at our High Street butchers. I'll try to do the conversion sum, but it may take some time!
I reckon that our mince cost £2.99 a pound. We live in Yorkshire, by the way.
I bet you got the very best steak mince rather than the ordinary. I'm in London and wouldn't expect to pay that.
That's £3 per pound, Bookbinder.

Out local butcher was offering mince at £8.36 per kg the other day (£3.80 per pound) but offering ½kg free with every 1kg purchased, making it just £2.53 per pound really.

World meat prices (especially beef) are rising rapidly (and are expected to continue to do so for at least a decade) because of increased demand from China. (The same applies to dairy products, so expect to see milk prices going up very soon).
I pay £7 a kilo for beef mince, I get it from the farmer who has his own shop. I trust him not to give me horse and I know the cows are well looked after, I pass their field on the way. Im sure it's not cheap but I have no idea if it's expensive.
just under a fiver for minced steak here albs, rather than ordinary mince
try buying a pork chop with kidney attached, you pay for complete chop, now buy pork chop minus kidney and buy kidney on it's own, does it work out cheaper, not when the butcher puts his finger on the scales, that's why so many people avoid local butchers.

arrg, I don't mind paying a fair price for good stuff, eg meat, milk, bread providing the farmer gets a fair share too.
The thoought of milk going up soon is not a nice thought, the farmer won't get any of it I'm sure.
Question Author
it was steak mince, I must admit, and local butcher is very good.

Younger alba, some years back, put me off supermarket mince, he reckoned it looked like a tub of worms :-)

ouch, Sloopy, a fiver for mince?!

I know albs, but its superb steak and I get six good meals from a half kilo
Extra lean ground beef in the Toronto area is $4.99/lb, or 2.72GBP.

if yer not careful, Sloopy, I'll be sending the young albas down to you!

The abattoir working one, though, will be bringing me home a kilo of siloin steak on Wednesday, £6 (very nice)

Hi Stuey xx
(I do wish you'd get back to Stewaey)

That is blooming reasonable!
Top sirloin steak at 4.36GBP/lb.
Question Author
Gawd, I can't spell, sorry Stewey x

Have you had any more finds of papers?

You've got blooming reasonable prices!
Alba, I just don't seem to be able to reunite myself with "stewey". Yes, I have all kinds of interesting finds.
Question Author
I think we should lobby the ED on Monday to get you back to yourself!

If you can, please post some of the finds, they're fascinating and really interesting to see what was happening in them days :-)
If I get back to "normal", I will; however, I don't like starting new threads as I get emails to any response I get (I don't like that) even though I have unclicked the "subscribe to my own threads" box.
Perhaps the price is related to the quality of the meat minced.

What does butcher taste like anyway ? Anything like chicken ?
