I thought this was a brilliant series and hopefully another one will follow but, I don't know if I missed something but who were the people on the motorbike who shot the man in the van?

Hit men - working for the Mr Bigs of the drug distribution cartel.
Question Author
I gathered that but just wondered if we knew or do you reckon that will be in the (hopefully) follow up
I think the implication was that the top people in the drug cartel were pretty much beyond the reach of the law (or even protected by it).

Might be a good starting point for series 2.

Which (like you) I'd love to see.
Haven't enjoyed a series quite as much as this for ages! I deduced that they were the hit men for the Mr Bigs too.
Excellent series. I recorded all of it & spent the last 2 days watching them all. There could be so many starting points for a follow up series. The one thing I wasn't sure of is did Ashley's wife accept witness protection or not.
I wouldn't think she would need to now...
Terrific series, edge of seat stuff! I do feel tho' that Sarah Lancashire is getting most of the praise and feel a bit sorry for the rest of them. They were all perfectly cast and all were brilliant.
I am also wondering if they have gone nearly as far as they can with this so maybe the next series may be about other cases that Sarah is involved in, so we can still find out more about her family. Just a thought -rosy
Oh I assumed it was Ann's father, Nevison, who organised the 'hit men' thinking Ashley might not be rightly by the law?? (if you know what I mean)
Sarah at her best again.
How come she is not Dame Sarah yet ?
The hit men obviously worked for the head of the drugs firm and there is no need to know their identity. I'd be disappointed if series 2 were based on discovering who was behind the hit. I'm with rosyposy - a new storyline for series 2.
I finished watching it on catch-up Thursday night. It was excellent.

I think Dave has a point and that the Councillor guy, or whatever he is, is connected in some way which is why he and the cartel may be beyond the law.
