Highlight th 'st' or 'nd' etc, then go to the format menu and click on font - there are checkboxes for both superscript and subscript.
Depending on the version of Word check the options under "Autoformat" or "Autocorrect". Later versions allow you to do this automatically (as soon as the space bar is hit).
I use Word 2000. To use the keyboard for subscript type what you want to subscript then highlight it - control/= together; superscript - highlight then control/shift/+.
