Just don't burn any bridges. Be short and sweet:

Dear Boss,

I hereby give notice of my resignation, my working day here will be (take account of hols etc). I have enjoyed my time here but I now must seek further challenges.

Yours Faithfully

That should read "My last working day here"

Loosehead had it right. Don't go out of your way to get up their noses. You never know; believe me. You could probably let them work out when your last day would be. If you are on a month's notice (say) all you need to do is to make it clear that your resignation is effective from the date of your letter.

If you are working for a council though, and going to another one, and say you work mon to fri, and were starting a new job on the next mon, your last day would be the sunday under 'continuous employment' this probably only matters if you have a pension with them though.

Hope this doesn't confuse-if you don't work for a council it's just the ramblings of a mad woman!
