Can he retract his letter of resignation

Hi, I have a friend who typed a letter of resignation (did not sign it) and gave it to his employers. Soon after, he realised he did not want to resign and spoke to his employers however they have said that he cannot retract the letter. Does anyone know if this is right or not? Thanks all x

they obviously dont want him to stay or they would have let him retract it, would be pretty awkward now if he stays would it not? good luck to him
