...on external hard drives...I told the sales rep I wanted to backup my files and asked if a hard drive would be better than discs or flash drives. Within 30 seconds the assistant had moved from hard drive to disc to 'cloud storage'...this he highly recommended...guess who sells cloud storage at £50 a time ,yup...PC World. I told him I wasn't interested in gaming, his response was 'ah but if you were then'...and off he went again. In twenty five minutes he never once asked me a question...like what do you want to backup, do you run a pc or laptop, what is your operating system.....nothing, he just banged on with facts, features and figures

I don't buy features, I buy benefits...ie how will that feature benefit me....Maybe PC World should retrain their sales people.

Ah, you must have looked like a 'ditherer'. Just walk in head held high and march across to the 3TB storage devices, pick one up and proudly go to the checkout.
Agreed, they are annoying in PC World but it must be lucky day because when was in my local store this morning they stayed clear of me until I summoned one across (only to get the standard "we are expecting a delivery of those today" response).
Buy online. Much more legal protection if something goes wrong or you buy the wrong thing
I'm sorry but the very thought of going to PC World for advice just doesn't work for me.
Akin to asking Edwina Currie for advice on... well, anything, really!
the only advice i might ask for when i go there is to where things have been shifted since my last visit
I bought a Toshiba external hard drive from PC World last summer, for about £50, Its one Tb and is very small and neat. My assistant was about 12 years old and couldn't have been more helpful.

I can't really see the point of Cloud Storage. With my Toshiba, I can get at my data wherever I am. I don't have to scurry around trying to find a Wifi signal, which is good when you are in a caravan in the wilds of Cornwall ! I don't need internet access to do it and it fits into my shirt pocket. It doesn't need a separate power supply either.

This is the one I have ::

I agree, Mikey. The Cloud has its advantages, of course, but there's no getting away from the fact that the best definition of it is "someone else's computer".
Oh you never ask shop assistants (especially computer ones) for advice. Chances are they know less than yourself and will tell spin the miost amazing nonsense at you. If you need to know, ask Sheldon.
LOL. Appreciate the BBT reference... :-)
Actually OG, my experience with shop assistants at PC World is that the younger and spottier they are, the more knowledgeable they appear to be.
When you are our age of course, you have to put up with that look of incredulity on these puppies faces when you have to ask them what a terror bite is, but its a small price to pay.
Same in Currys when we were looking at chest freezers, the assistant could not answer one question I asked. His excuse was "sorry I'm in training" I replied "well it's not really your fault then is it, but your trainer for not giving you any product knowledge which is vital when dealing with customers!"
had all this in curry's to last year when i bought this laptop I'm on now, bloke telling me you need this you need that wouldn't stop going on and on so i called the manager over told him "you just lost a sale of £400 mate because this bloke here wont take no for an answer" with that the manager took over and gave me an apology and gave me some free ink for my printer and i brought the laptop!
