After a system recovery, how do I find out if Microsoft's SP2 is on my system?

right click my computer and select properties, right above "registered to" it will tell you what service pack you have.
On your desktop, right click on "My Computer" and choose Properties :

Or you could try going into "Add/Remove Programs" via the Control Panel to see if it's listed there.
Peanut was right but for future use, download TweakUI and choose to display the version of windows on the desktop - very handy and not obtrusive.
