You couldn't make it up. You can only have life saving drugs if we deem you to be of value to society! Right oh!

the government is probably hoping NICE will make all the decisions to deny drugs to workshy scum?
Probably none at the moment.....otherwise they would immediately approve their use!
I don't think this is really anything new. The NHS has been cost conscious for a very long time - but I'm too tired to google for a link.
I think I will wait until the draft proposals come out before deciding whether it makes sense or not. Not totally surprising that the ABPI would like to create some scaremongering in advance of some new proposals that might curtail some of their profits.
Reminds me of the film Soyent Green. I think that's what it was called.
This regularly happens already. There isn't much information in the link to say exactly what the plans are, or what it will be judged on.
It is a Draft Report. For Consultation. It is not law or in operation.

If the recommendations are wrong then we hope that the results of the consultation will highlight that.

Seems this is a scaremongering story. The people mostly quoted in the link are the Pharmaceutical industry who are ripping off he NHS for £billions and are fearful that ANY change will affect their huge profits.

We need to look at ways of saving money in the NHS without affecting care. This is one idea. If it is wrong then hopefully feedback will tell them that.

But vested interests like multiNational drugs firms should be the last people we take notice of. I would sooner listen to a clinical assessment of whether these drugs are for all rather than the bleating of a foreign owned company trying to maximise their profits.
I trust Mr Hunt completely to veto any attempt to discriminate against the elderly, sick or disabled. After all he's one of Cameron's "Compassionate Conservatives"
How old is he? More to the point.
The Nazis had a similar policy but they came at it from a different angle; We'll only kill you if we think you're NOT a benefit to society.
//Under an appraisal system, Nice will have to take into account “wider societal benefits” alongside the cost of medication and its life-enhancing properties. //

Lets read that again

*alongside the cost of medication and its life-enhancing properties.*

not instead of - and not "you, you but not you" on an individual basis as the OP implies!

And who has the great fears for the elderly?

//Pharmaceutical firms on Thursday night warned that the move could lead to new medicines being denied to the elderly.//

Oh right the Pharmacutical companies!

Now I don't often agree with the government but I do this time!

A spokesman for the Department of Health said: "This is irresponsible scaremongering based on pure speculation about a consultation that has not even started. It is absolutely not true to say that older people will not get treatment because of their age.”

Yes, I agree with my left 3 wing posters........a bit of scaremongering perhaps.

or even 3 left wing posters........;-)
