Your mother made you wear WHAT?

My granny once knitted me the most awful cardigan. The sleeves were a foot too long and she ran out of wool so the front and one sleeve were a different shade. It took her 2 years to complete, by which time I had grown considerably. When fastened up it was so tight I looked like a cross between Richard III and Quasimodo. My mum made me wear it to please gran and it left me traumatised! Has anyone been made to wear anything similarly awful as a child?

Natalie 1982.  Your postings have made my laugh so much!!  Thanks.

thikasabrik - I've just re-read your question & was in fits of laughter - those sleeves!

Revshirls - your shopping trolley story made me chuckle too. Way back in ''77 when we moved to a house near the town, my dear Mum bought me a tan coloured shopping trolley on wheels. I showed my appreciation with a kiss & a hug, then promptly put it in the loft. It moved with us again in '83 & is still in the loft.

Now I'm approaching 58, it may be time to start using it, but 'no way jose!

Bless you Mum -x-

tight ill fitting white jumpers that you could see through - embarrassing for a little girl in flower print undershirts!  - made out of cheap scratchy material a cross between granny's left over yarn and hay. also, pink knee length pants that ended in a bow (horror!) and numerous skirts that the boys would try to look under as i walked up the school steps. traumatic!

i've never laughed so hard in my life! sorry i don't have a story! my mom made all my clothing when i was little, and i love them! i still have most of them. i'm even putting them on my daughter. she looks so sweet! ( in 20yrs she'll be starting this thread again!)

I'm still re-reading all your answers. I haven't had so much fun in ages!!
Oh what a great thread. A knitted bathing suit when I was about eight years old.Well, you can just imagine it.By the time I emerged from the sea it was down to my knees.
Liberty bodices.Oh my god!
At school we were obliged to wear 60 denier stockings with a seam up the back in a horrible shade called "Sun Mist" .Ladder them at your peril.Mine always had blobs of nail varnish creeping up the sides!!

You've reminded me shaneystar - I have a photo of me in my swim suit at 11years old. I was as skinny as a rake & it too came down to my knees when leaving the sea!

Also, it took so long to do those rubber liberty bodice buttons up FP!

The sad looking kids of yesteryear!

Just read your post on rags Smudge.I remember them well!
I used to pull them out on one side and get a clip round the ear for my trouble! when I did manage to keep them in they were curled round mothers finger which was wetted with Todilocks and then a great bow plonked on top of my head. Then on went the white socks ,pleated skirt and bolero and woe betide me if I got them dirty. All this just to visit my Nan round the corner!!

I used to have plaits with great big bows on the end.  My mother used to plait so tightly that I looked as if I had a face lift and it gave me a headache.  On special occasions I was allowed a pony tail, but was never able to wear it loose.  The freedom of having my hair cut into a pudding bowl at 11 was wonderful.

I also remember the tremendous arguments in shoe shops, but I always had to give in and wear Clarks lace ups in the winter and Clarks sandals in the summer.  I so wanted some pretty shoes.

Bless our mothers, they meant so well.

FP, you don't know how lucky you were being allowed Clarks shoes. My mum once bought me some Brevitt Bouncers which were basically brown leather lace up brogues. She bought them cos my nan's friends all swore they were soooo comfy. As a 10 yr old I was mortified having to wear old ladies shoes. The following summer all my friends were wearing pretty Clarks sandals while I was clomping around in...wait for it...Jesus sandals. Arghhhhh.

On the big boxes of chocolates you used to get a ribbon tied on the side. The bow couldn't be undone. My mum attached some elastic to it and my sister wore it for shcool. The bow was far too big.
