Was stood at one of these at the weekend trying to feed a £2.00 coin in but it kept ejecting it - the lady behind me recommended scratching the milled edge of the coin against the top of the machine, which was plastic covered, and then trying to insert it again. Did this and..... it worked - the machine accepted it. Why ? ?

I don't know, but I've always licked coins (not very hygienic I know) if they get rejected at the car park machine, and that has always worked.

I was about to do that when the lady behind came up with her suggestion - would love to know why it worked ? ! ?
over time coins get dirty so rubbing them removes this and makes the sensors in the machine read the coin better
