My father in law's Renault 4. I was in my early twenties, passed first time.
An Austin A40... yes! It was THAT long ago !
Austin 1100.
These answers certainly give away the age group of the majority of people on this site!
Driving lessons in a Ford Anglia ( failed test), Ford Corsair (passed).
Dad bought a 1953 Ford Prefect for my brother and little old me to practice our skills, went on many a pub crawl in that.
I haven't read all through this thread, but surely I am the only one to say a Riley Pathfinder.
^^^ the last Riley car I can remember was the Elf and that was around in the 1960's. How long ago was that?
I tried to learn in an old marina once but gave up when me and another learner both stalled at a mini roundabout and didn't know who's right of way it was, lol. I'm just as bad with shopping trollies!
Morris Minor

Off-duty a Zephyr, straight 6 with a 3 speed column change or a
Daimler Dart,
On-duty one of HM's Landrovers of dubious vintage.
Baza; The elf wasn't a 'real' Riley it simply bore the badge for BMC along with the mini etc. The Pathfider was the last real Riley I believe, it had an engine made by Riley at Abingdon and some were used as police cars before Jaguars. They had, like some Rolls Royces, a right hand gear change down between the driver and his door. The gear lever being connected to the g'box by a series of rods and universal joints under the floor, inevitably these joints suffered from wear and resulted in bad changing which led to gear box damage. I drove mine for quite a long time believe it or not without a first or reverse gear which meant being very careful how I parked in order to be able to drive straight away!
Ford, Cortina. MK unknown 2.0 litre late eighties.
Austin Allegro - bought for 250 quid had it for 6 months, passed my test and sold it for 295 quid. Bloody thing was absolute sh*te (and that horrible orangey colour) but did it's job
Driving school used a 1982 "Y" reg Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6L. I was the envy of my pals who were learning in Fiestas, Novas, Metros and Micras. It was a bit of a come-down when I passed my test and had to get used to my own Vauxhall Viva with the 1256 pushrod engine
