I have seen more and more people eating in this way, especially young people, elbow on table, shoveling food in using only their fork instead using a knife and fork together. I think it looks slovenly and is bad manners.

we are not concerned with around the world, only here, and once it was using a knife and fork, the Americans are to blame for this, using a fork alone, i was seriously miffed at my then b/f in a lovely restaurant when he did it, elbows on tables too, not a good look
I would have to be at a seriously prim and proper do to eat in a very formal manner....for me food is a pleasure to be shared and enjoyed.

I would draw the line at open mouth chewing, dribbling and plate licking but otherwise I love relaxed dining...x
Having an International heritage and travelled the world I eat a diet influenced by my travels sitting down to dim sum with a knife and fork would be weird to me.

My diet features dished from all over the globe and I would be surprised I ate a dish classed as 'British' once a week.

My point is, we are evolving with our culinary habits and consequently our dining habits will adjust too.
When I lived in a hotel in London for a year, I often dined out by myself..........it was right hand for fork, left hand for book.
one can eat chinese food with chopsticks, try using only one? and they are the noisiest and fastest diners i have ever come across.
I frequently only use a fork, I only use a knife if I need too.

it wasn't just a British thing, however it was considered good manners,
my grandmother would have thrown a fit had we shovelled it in with just a fork,
Why would anyone use just one chopstick?

Having said that at least you couldn't leave a lone chopstick crossed on your plate.....
Trig... while I have perfected the art of drinking Guinness seductively... plate licking has me beaten.........I always end up with a splodge of sauce on my nose....☺
You're doing it wrong. You wipe with your finger then lick that ! Preferably not in public though.
I have finished preparing supper and am about to lay the table.

A knife and fork will be on the table, not all at the table will use their knife.

Would it be slovenly and/or bad manners to shoot/stab them at the table for their poor conduct?
I feel lost without a decent steak knife in my hand, even if I don't need it or use it.
I think my ancestors would have kept hold of the knife to fight off bears coyotes and buzzards ;-)
