Barely heard of Halloween when I was a kid, it was all firework night which was more important than Christmas at least in our family.
Halloween was hardly celebrated until sometime in the 1970s 80s when the government decided to publicise it as a safer alternative to Guy Fawkes night.

I believe it to be an ancient Celtic/Pagan festival, an opportunity to venerate and remember the ancestors.
