Can anyone let me know the name of an e-reader that can read books with colour plates in the centrespread for instance.The Kindle paperwhite that my wife uses can only show pictures in b/w.

I have an ordinary kindle but I also have a kindle fire. That shows colour pictures, you can even upload your own photos onto it, music as well. I use the kindle fire sometimes rather than get out the laptop
