Steven Conlan’s car hit Grahame McGregor after he missed a stop sign and illegally drove through a junction. The satnav system had failed to register the junction and had not instructed the motorist to stop, a court heard.
satnavs have NEVER instructed the driver to stop at junctions!
They give you directions, not point out every road sign and marking for you so you don't have to bother thinking for yourself!
I am amazed that his legal team even dared to suggest this, and that no-one thought to tell this to the judge!

The irony is that there is a very strong possibility that the accident was actually caused by the driver paying attention to his sat-nav, instead of to what was happening on the road.
I think that sat-navs are more of a hazard than using a mobile phone whilst driving.

Sat Navs are useful but they have to be used in conjunction with common sense.
Just last weekend my Sat Nav told me to drive down a road which had been dug up and if I had obeyed the instructions my car would have gone down a hole.
A few years ago I was stopped for speeding but I was slowing down after I realised somebody had turned the sign around so it was showing 60 for a 30 mph limit.
The police officer agreed that the sign was misleading so I was not prosecuted.
It was however obvious from about 200 yards beyond the sign you could not do 60 safely so if somebody carried on at that speed they should have been prosecuted for dangerous driving.
That said if somebody had carried on doing 40 I would have said that was not dangerous.

Well the judges haven't exactly covered themselves in glory lately have they? Looks like another example of dipstickery from one of M'Luds.
Satnav blindneess is becomming more common as drivers seem to think the satnav muist be right therefore the road etc must actually be an illusion! There was one a few months back that turned up a railway track. Now I don't know about you but the presence of railway lines on the road would cause me to think about it a bit!

most satnavs do not allow you to adjust them etc when you are moving - mine won't because it knows it means you are trying to drive and mess with it at the same time.
but even if he was fiddling with it, he should have been paying attention - satnavs also do not show the road markings so the fact that they were quite faded is irrelevant.
they look pretty clear on the photos anyway!
i accept that satnavs can cause some confusion at times, - i myself was flashed doing the wrong speed because my old maps were showing the old speed limit - but that is a feasible things to happen and could happen to anyone - and i was not 'let off'.

On the face of it, the motorist should have seen that it was a junction and is entirely at fault for the cyclist's death.
That said, the motorist has not been "let off". He has been found guilty, but "spared jail".
I feel very sorry for all involved.
