i am the same, i have a cat and she once had flees and i ended up itching and scratching and had puffy eyes, so i de-flead her and took a load of benedril antihistamines or piraton, and now im not too bad. ask your freind to de-flea the cats, and u could also take antihistamines
get new friends - cats rule!

Get the friends to deflea the cats properly, not forgetting to deflea their homes as well (the carpets will be chock full of fea eggs if it's got that bad)

You can protect yourself to an extent by giving yourself a quick douse down with flea spray...especially round your ankles, before your go. To be honest, if it's bothering you, imagine how miserab;le the poor cats must feel.

If it's the cats fur that makes you sneeze etc...then there are products to buy that you can spray directly onto the cat to minimise the amount of dander on their fur...dander is the stuff that makes people have an allergic reaction. The stuff is available at Boots.

Are you sure you are allergice to the fleas? Usually allergies to animals is due to being allergic to the cat's dander (dried saliva from the cats licking its fur) and can be from the hair as well. You might want to be allergy tested to be sure because there could be other allergens involved unrelated to the animals. You'd hate to get rid of the animals if the problem was not from them. Try to not have the animals in the room where you sleep and non-sedating anti-histamines may work well. benadryl has an accumulative effect and may cause you to be sleepy and sluggish after a few days.
