These are in the Sun, Telegraph I think, not Times.
Do you mean Sunday Telegraph?

5d Tenace
This is a combination of two cards in the same suit where one card outranks the second card. However, they are not touching cards, but rather one card is two degrees lower than the other card. For example: Ace Queen in the same suit form a major tenace. King Jack in the same suit form a minor tenace.

17a looks like STANZA -

Integers
Many stanza entries expect the value for the entry to be expressed as an integer. When defining an entry with an integer, consider the following guidelines:

Stanza entries that take an integer value expect integer values within a valid range. The range is described in terms of a minimum value and a maximum value.

5d = tenace

17a = quanta

any use?

PS ....quanta fits with 15d which is Butyl

I think!

If the t is wrong in 17a, I would go with alzheimer.

I have Ethyl for 15d and Stanza fits for 17a but not too sure about either of them.
What's the clue for 15d?

Hello wideboy...

Q15d = -- alcohol, isomeric alcohol used as a solvent

In my book it says Butyl

and as I had quanta (pl.of quantum) first, it just all fitted..but maybe not! Any better sugs?

Alzheimer, unfortunately both ethyl and butyl alcohols are isomeric and both are used as solvents. The clue isn't very good is it?

Hi Folks...more money than sense me...just tried out the answer line...couldn't resist it, as I quite agree that clue 15D wasn't very good like you said, wideboy.

Now feeling very smug...the answers ARE

15D = BUTYL and 17A = QUANTA

Which 'answerline'? The Times?
