Am I able to phone home (UK) using my Sagem MYX-5 in Majorca? Would the cost be similar to the phone in the hotel? Thanks

As long as your phone is at least dual band then no problem. Not sure of the cost but Majorca to England is like a local call - Majorca to Majorca will be long distance as your phone connects to the English network.
Also make sure that your mobile has been set up with your service provider to have this facility before you go (I think it is called Roaming) i.e. ask the provider if your phone is set up for Roaming.Looking at the answer from NETBIZA looks as though they should know about this from their name but not too sure Majorca to London charged at local costs I have taken my mobile on holiday and  allways paid more to phone overseas/London than London/London??
That's the problem - when you switch to Roaming your caller gets to pay half of the call - I always ignore the roaming and stick to your normal provider.  A lot of us over here in Spain have English mobiles specifically to call England and it is a local charge.
Your phone is capable of it. It will depend on whether your home network has an agreement with a network over there to allow you to use it (as the others have said).

As soon as you turn on your phone in Majorca, it will log onto a local network that lets it, then you'll get a text from your home network explaining how to make calls. You should automatically be able to receive calls and texts but it's worth checking with your network before you go.

As soon as you are no longer on your home network (in the UK), you are "Roaming". If you call or text someone, you will pay for the entire cost and it will more than likely be more expensive than using your phone at home (though probably cheaper than the hotel phone).
If someone calls or texts you when you are away, then they pay the same as they would to call you if you were still at home and you pay to have the call diverted to where you are.

I would strongly advise you to switch off your mobile phone whilst away. Especially if its pay as you talk.

The mobile phone networks charge extortionate fees for using your phone outside of the UK, and they also charge you for recieving calls, and for people leaving you messeges.

Leave your phone off and just use payphones outside the hotel. You will save yourself about 30 per week

Payphone - UK = 0.20 - 0.40 per minute ( 14/28p)

Hotel phone - UK = 0.50 - 0.80 per minute ( 35/56p)

Mobile - UK = 1.50 - 2.00 per minute (and 70p per minute if someone phones you!)
