Hi All,

Has anyone been to Rome?

Any recommendations on hotels and what time of year is the best/cheapest to go?

I'm planning on taking my hubby there for his 40th, which is in August. I have been advised that it will be very expensive because of school holidays and maybe go in September?!

I would prefer hotel somewhere central.

Thanks in advance.

PS Sorry if this doesn't make sense, I'm at work

it can get pretty hot and crowded in August - lots of tourists. September's better, even if your husband didn't manage to be born then.
I went a couple of years ago. We stayed here http://www.hotelastoriagarden.it/ It has a lovely private garden at the back and you can request a garden view room. We were lucky and got the one with the largest private terrace! It is very close to the station which was great for getting back to the hotel - we just hopped on any bus which was going to 'termini'. And we didn't notice any lowlife hanging around. I would highly recommend getting the Roma Pass. It gets you free transport (handy for hopping on those buses!) There is a dedicated entrance for Roma Pass holders into the Colosseum - which saved us about 45 minutes queuing! We also got free entrance into the forum and the Capitaline museum. I'm sure that Rome is hot and busy in August - but so are many places. I think I personally would prefer September (I actually went in February!) but I would suggest that you check the prices of flights and see what suits you.
I wouldn't like to reccomend this city. It's hot, noisy and crowded all the year
Well unless starcounter has actually lived in Rome I doubt that their statement is true. As I mentioned I went in February. It wasn't hot (though was warmer than here), it wasn't noisier than any other city I've been to (well, maybe Venice was quieter but that would be the lack of cars, buses and lorries!) and whilst there were certainly many people around I don't think it was that busy. We walked straight into the Vatican museum yet on the surrounding wall there were signs saying '40 minute wait from here' etc. Just because one person has had a not so good time there doesn't mean that you won't enjoy it. Go and try for yourself!
Rome is an amazing place for travelling and late March through May is a great time to visit this place. You can prefer Sheraton Roma Hotel for staying purpose.
