Double meaning - look it up
Double meaning( tack is a name for food as in hardtack)
Tack was an old naval term for food, as in hard tack (biscuit)

Many thanks. I DID look it up but I never saw any mention of food. Cheers guys.

It would have been better if he had stated hard food as it appears to be specific 'hardtack'.
You need a better dictionary! Chambers gives: tack: food generally, fare, esp. of the bread kind such as hard tack (ship biscuit), and soft tack (loaves)
