I think the term has been taken on two meanings; yes it does mean personality inparticular your base (innermost) emotions and feelings. It is also commonly (and quite differently) accredited to meaning the part of ones self that survives death. This could or could not include personality although I am not sure what would be left it didn't. Its existence is a matter of personel belief - which I will leave for others to debate. Just to confuse matters though, emotions and feelings are of course derived from physical conditions in the brain.
I think you will find that like many other words used in the hypnosis of the masses (like 'democracy' and 'caring') it means whatever the the user wants it to mean. In other words it is what modern parlance would call "context dependant".
It also refers to something you feel strongly about, or do a lot. Your personality refers to a different thing. For instance if you wanted to take on the personality of someone who stuttered you would stutter becuase that's how their personality comes across. But there's nothing in their soul (presumably) which says 'stutter'.
