has anyone deciced to pack up driving because of okd age?
Well I was 90 last month and as the insurance is due April 1st,
thought it time to cakll it a day.
Currently i do about 200 miles a year - mostly to the local shops or the doctors - cost per mile must be horrific.
My wife is in a nursing home and I use the local taxi all the time.
Guess i will get used to it in time.
Sorry to part with my faithful Citroen C3

Good for you, jacklee... we have drivers here in the U.S. about your age and their accident rate is somewhat higher than the average. Ironically, the accident rate for those under 19 years of age is considerably higher and the severity of the accident is also higher... go figure. Again, congratulations!
Congratulations on your longevity of your driving career, jacklee, however, as you say you've now made the decision to call it a day. Once again, congratulations, and I hope you'll soon get settled without your car.
My first accident on the road was on a bicycle with a 1965 Ford Cortina. The driver did not see me because his eyesight was not up to scratch. Upon direction by the local constabulary he voluntarily revoked his license and compensated me for my destroyed bike and crushed testicles. I have since fathered a son.
I respect your judgement Jack, too many will not except that they are a danger to themselves & others without knowing it, I hope you all the best & do hope others that know you in your area will have the goodwill to help you should you need to get to see your wife urgently> Good Luck.
As far as I would be concerned it was good to give it up at 90 but 70-80 years ago there was no test to be done so don't know whether Jack ever did a driving test. Did you Jack?
Thanks to you all for the kind comments.
yes passed test 1947 - lessons were a pound each! - I was earning the handsome salary of £5 week - and married!
no real regrets about hanging up my keys - I guess the less you use a car then the less confident you are - and I didn't want to be a nuisance.
Good to be on Chatterbank - but am lost as regards 'strings'
Cheers
jacklee
My Dad, aged 88, was still driving upto two months ago. He got labyrinthitis and is still suffering from it, but improving. I don't know if he will get his confidence back after a spell without driving but I was out with him just before Christmas and felt very secure with his driving. I felt safer with him than several younger drivers I've been with over the years. ps. He stopped caravanning when he reached 80.
Well done on so many years of, I presume, eventful driving. I bet you've seen some changes over the years.
However be VERY careful. There is one lovely lady on here, Starone, who is currently the oldest member on Answerbank - but I think you pip her by a few years, but I'm sure she'll wish you well.
