I Just Want "ripe" Bananas And Kiwi Fruit, Is That Too Much To Ask?

We usually shop in Morrisons but im fed up with green bananas, they are hard and difficult to peel. We now need to buy excess bananas and Kiwi and keep a backlog for ripening.

I will have a look around the other supermarkets to see if they do ripe ones, I never used to have this problem!!!!!

It winds me up!!!

I always buy my bananas a bit green so I can keep them longer.

We dont have a local market and I aint driving 15 miles just to buy bananas. I will look in the smaller green grocers though.

Do they still have the pannier market in Bideford BTW? The one in Barnstaple is really good for fruit and veg. My mum used to make a once a week trip there for that sort of thing. When I went into Morrisons in Bideford, I saw that they had shrink-wrapped every single cucumber, avocado and pepper. I wrote and asked them why they did that. I got the ususal claptrap in reply about how they`re doing their bit for the environment etc.

They do ripen off if you buy green ones you know and if you don't want them to go brown stick them in the fridge.

237SJ, They do still have the Bideford pannier market but no fruit stall.

Ive never seen shrink wrapped fruit in Morrisons.

Cupid, I know they ripen but I want to eat them when I buy them not a week later, I dont want to have a rotation system in my kitchen just so I can eat a fresh banana when I want one.

I did manage to find a few nearly ripe bananas in Asda, they will keep me going for a day or two.

Panic over for now!!

The reason why supermarkets like Tesco sell underripe bananas is because they have a longer shelf life when they are ripe. All their fruit is based on long shelf life not on ripness or flavour. As long as mugs keep buying their fruit in Supermarkets they will keep selling poor quality fruit.

I meant me personally Ratter. I prefer them a bit green so they rippen as the week goes on and I can take one to work each day after a couple of days of rippening.

My problem is avacados. Every time a buy a couple they are nearly always under-ripe and when I leave them a few days they seem to go brown inside.

The current trend with many fruits nowadays seems to be buy now and ripen at home,so in the case of many fruits(not bananas) one could put some in the fridge to ripen slower than others so less waste etc.

asda sell ready-to-eat bananas. About six in a pack, around about a quid (ish). And they are READY TO EAT :D

First tip...Avoid Columbian bananas. They are a variety that doesn't keep, and instead of turning a nice yellow, they become grey-brown and rot. They don't taste very good, either. Ivory Coast, Costa Rica, and Dominican bananas are hugely better varieties. The best from that part of the world are the Leeward and Windward Island bananas, but I haven't seen any of these in ages. It's the old story, supermarkets will buy from the cheapest supplier. Second tip...It's much easier to peel a ripe banana by starting from the bottom end, rather than at the stem end!

"Fruit of the Devil" for Lady J and me, we can't take even the smallest piece of banana and the smell sends me running. Also I can end up in hopsital.....It's a family thing too, half the family very anti and the other half pro.

asda do a range of banana's I hate the ripe ones as they dont last long, the worst fruit to buy is pears, they are like rocks for days and days after purchase

Thanks guys for all the tips and advice, I now have my bananas, they will last a day or two and then I will be searching again, looks like Asda is winning at the moment.
