My husband is continually clearing his throat and it is driving me mad. If we are somewhere where we have to be quiet, he still does it, but quietly! It sounds like it needs clearing, if you understand what I mean, but he won't go to the doctor, you know what men are like ... he smoke small cigars occasionally but not ciggies. Help ! :)

It sounds like he has catargh (sp?) and it may be conjoined with a nervous cough as well. He should get it checked though because this could be a sign of an infection, or something developing. Make him see the doctor.

Too much dairy can also make you very phlegmy if this is a habit he's always had. If it is new then the doc is the best idea. My partner is more likely to go and talk to a pharmacist than a doctor - you could suggest this, and if they think it's something to worry about they will recommend a doctor. He might take the advice better from them than you.

He's had this for ages now, I think you could be right about the dairy, maybe I will start him on Soya milk, like me .. Thanks everyone.

Hi judiewudie

i can sympatiese with jou, my husband has been doing the same thing for almost 30 odd jears now. it drives me nuts . he wont do anything about it either, blames it even on me. i noticed when he gets anxious he does it even more. i guess we have to live with it. i believe it is to do with the nervoussystem, and could even be a Tick, which is uncontrolable. Medication maybe could help, but what can jou do if they dont see a doctor.?

Holden -- I think we are married to the same man ! Seriously though, my brother in law and my uncle also do the same thing, perhaps they don't realise they are doing it. I must say though, I am getting him to drink more soya milk (like I do) in tea and on cereal, and I don't know if I am imagining it, but he does seem to be clearing his throat less. He says it's a load of rubbish though, and that he is clearing his throat as much as he used to, at least he admits to it ! Thanks everyone :-)
