I have answered this before
You write down what you see
Your last number has one (1) followed by one (3) followed by two (1's) followed by three (2's) followed by one (1)

gen2 - is there an easier way of explaining it for an eejit like me please? I got lost at "your last number"

gen2 please excuse my chipping in in response to Dustybun's query.

The first number in the sequence is 1

In words it is one 1, or using numerals, it is 1 1

So the second number in the sequence will be 11

In words this second number is two 1s, which we can write as 21 and this becomes the third term

(We now have in the sequence 1 11 21)

In words, 21 is one 2, followed by one 1; in numerals this is 1 2 followed by 1 1 which is 1211, the fourth term.

Going on, the last term in the given question is 13112221

In words, this consists of one 1, followed by one 3, followed by two 1s followed by three 2s, followed by one 1. In numerals, this is 1 1, 1 3, 2 1, 3 2, 1 1.

Moving the figures together we get 1113213211, which is the next term.

I hope this helps.

Mohill you get a gold star. Go to the top of the class.
Mohill, you are a brick - you made it sound so logical I was home and dry by the fifth line! You must be a teacher. If not, why not? Judging by the remark from BabsG, I'm not the only one to have benefitted. Many thanks.
