I bought a dictionary from a charity shop and thought I got a bargain at 50p. However, the previous owner must have been a really heavy smoker and the whole book stinks so badly I can't even bear to open it. Anyone got any tips on how to get rid of the smell?

Thanks.

Put the book into a container or plastic bag with half an onion, freshly cut. Leave for 12 hours. The other half onion will do an entire room if cigarette stink is a problem.
Stanley you are treading a fine line here! Celtigra asked how she could get the smell out of her book and you have used her thread to lecture me about smoking .Yes...I am trying to give up and I don't need your input....I have three brothers who are all ex smokers and I get enough nagging from them and my friend Robinia.I need encouragement not rude comments about my being three fags short of packet .
Bicarbonate of soda absorbs smells as well. Kim and Aggie use it in those smelly homes on furniture and carpets. But the cat litter idea sounds good cus it must be powerful stuff to get rid of cat pee smell.
depending on its condition, pin the front and back covers back and together so the pages splay, put it in the tumble dryer with a sheet of bounce
