Is this not one of the saddest things you've ever seen?

Sadly as someone who trawls through these ads on a regular basis I am sad to say this is not an unusual ad. There was one the other day for an 8 week old puppy, and the owner was selling it because she did not have time for it - er - perhaps you should have thought of that before you bought it! I get very very cross and have to stop myself phoning/emailing these people to...

lol....just showed the ad to number one son.... his reply... If you want him go and get him...but... He'll be dead with in a week of being here...!

Sadly I sort of have to agree... 2 Great Danes, 3 Yorkies [the reason this has touched me so much], two mental cats that attack the dogs at every possible moment....and then Dave the parrot! Not exactly the calm environment needed for this boy :0/

if as you say the ad's a few weeks old, with a bit of luck he's already got a home.

If not, what he needs is a retired couple with no other pets, one who can devote 100% attention to him, and make his last few years peaceful for him :-(

Know what you mean Lisa, your heart immediately goes "I'll have him!!" but like you, my house, with a demented dog, monstrous sized hell cat, and an even livelier 8 year child wouldn't exactly be stress free for him!
If its on Gumtree - take it with a pinch of salt.
A 15 year old, blind dog who's never been to the vet 'threw illness'? Pish!

Plenty of scams where a 'free to good home' dog or cat needs transport by an insured pet carrier.
It's a terrible thing to do to a family member,we've not got a furry friend at the moment, but we'd never of dreamt of doing something like this to Max, he was part of the family through thick and thin.

Gotta admit plowter I may be naive, but I took the ad at face value?

Could you explain what you mean by the last paragraph? I didn't get it?
The google address shown is on possibly the roughest housing estate in York.................
Oh the poor little mite! You'd think they would find a way to keep him for the last few months(or years) he may have.
I see it on the local rescue sites(yeh-I shouldn't look-what with having one of each already)....due to family 'problems'-the ancient dog or cat has to go. It's really heartbreaking.
My first rescue dog had been abandoned on the Yorkshire Moors. She was a tiny Chihuahua/Yorkie cross aged between 10 and 12. How could anyone possibly drive into the middle of nowhere and throw a dog out of the car?
B00, genuine example.

Advert was along the lines of:

"Free to good home. Loving husky pup. He was my daughter's who sadly died in a road accident and I can't look at the dog without thinking of my poor daughter. I want him to go to a loving home. Sob Sob. Contact me for photos."

The photos are, of course, ripped off the web.

Being a valuable dog he has to be transported by an insured pet carrier, but that'll be a small price for you to pay to get a lovely husky pup. It must be genuine because the seller has sent you emails of photos of the pup and owner. Isn't it?

The pet carrier company - a company that transports pets from one end of country to the other - exists because you've looked the company up.

You never see your money again and when you contact the carrier he tells you it's a common scam and he gets loads of calls like this.

A few weeks later the same advert appears with a different name.

Happens with cats and dogs.
Question Author
Oh right, understand that- but surely this isn't the case here?

If you want the dog, you collect it yourself here-right?
Question Author
oh Crafty, that's awful!

And in answer to your question, I don't know, and perhaps it's just as well, I don't want to understand people who'd do things like that.
Just been trawling through the pet ads on Gumtree and saw this one:

http://www.gumtree.com/p/pets/blue-merle-border-collie/1005116869

Blue Merle Border Collie £1 York
Blue Merle Border Collie, Bright Blue Eyes & Pink/Black Nose. Fantastic With Kids & Other Animals. OFFERS... As Need Him Gone Soon.

The last sentence shows such honesty.
I'd have them all if I could. My little dog died last year and I miss her so much but as both my husband and I are disabled we can't take a dog for a walk and he doesn't like cats (I do).
I have read the answers but can't read the post. I know it is going to be something very upsetting.

I get very very cross and have to stop myself phoning/emailing these people to tell them what I think. There is a campaign to stop pets being sold on the internet through sites like this, but to be honest I can't see it ever being stopped as nowadays its how people buy everything isn't it?
Marje, at fifteen and in his state I doubt he would ever need a walk. Just lots of TLC and a potter out to the garden for a wee would probably do him.
It wasn't so very long ago that the Mail was reporting on a staffie who had been sold on Gumtree and an out and out yob bought him and proceeded to torture him to death!!! I think laws should be passed to stop sites like Gumtree giving away defenceless animals like this. I pray this little mite finds a good home. My lad is 14 and the thought of giving him away makes my blood run cold. What IS wrong with folk ???
