Is it fair that athletes who were once banned for cheating are allowed to return and carry off gold?

Hmmm - I suppose if they are now clean, and have won on their own unaided merits, it's OK... but it's iffy.
No not fair and for that reason I felt relief when Chambers was knocked out in his heat.
no, but political machinations in sporting bodies allow it to happen
They wouldn't if I had my way.
I think it is wrong that they were subsequently selected to represent their country. As individuals it's up to them if they continue competeing at whatever level, but they should not have worn their national colours after being banned pevious to the games.
There was a discussion on Talksport some months back about this, and about Chambers in particular. The majority felt that his physique now might have been influenced by the substance(s) he had taken, although he is now clean.
I don't think they should be allowed back in.
I think it should be a life ban !!!..not in the spirit of the games..
I would ban them for life if they were found to be using drugs.
Eurosport forgets to mention Christine Ohuruogu in that list .
I thought she MISSED the tests not FAILED them?
Those who miss drug tests like Ohuruogu are clever, they have obviously taken drugs otherwise why miss the tests?

Missing tests results in short bans unlike those testing positive who get lengthy bans and are forever branded drugs cheats

Rio Ferdinand also a prime example
JoeLuke, The two people you mention have not been convicted of drug abuse.
I think your post is a little bit risky.
Convicted drug cheats should be banned for life.

I agree. They'll be told, 'you probably won't be caught, but even if you are you can still come back and go for gold.'
The wrong message altogether.
if they have got to cheat to "win" then it is not an honest one, how could you live with yourself? it's shameful... ban for life I say!
My view on this is like crime but with a slight difference.

"If you have done the time" then you are entitled to a fresh chance to prove yourself in society. So yes, they should. My rider is a medical one though - if there is any evidence that their body and mind have benefited from taking such steroids or whatever and their current performance could be enhanced, then no - permission to re-join should not be allowed. I suspect that this might just correlate to the "severity" of the drug taken as well as to its impact on the body.
