Such a sad story - don't think we can ever unestimate what grief does to a person.

My Dad always says that if Mum goes first, he won't be long behind her. It must be so hard to manage once your life partner has gone, especially as you get older. I hope these two are reunited.

I think the heavy feeling of grief can play a big part in getting a physical illness. Obviously some deal with it better than others, but perhaps if you have an underlaying condition, grief could certainly bring it out.

That reminds me of an experience I had way back in the days when I worked in casualty. We got a lot of silly attention seekers pretending to commit suicide, but one night we got an ambulance with an old man in it and he was already dead.

His wife had died a few weeks earlier and he cancelled all his papers and milk, put his dog in the kennels and emptied his late wife's medicine cabinet down his neck, leaving a heartbreaking note for his sons apologising for what he was doing, saying that after 50 odd years of marriage he didn't want to go on living without her.

I blubbered that night.

Duncer - that is heartbreaking, but totally understandable.

It was one of the rare times I had any feeling for an O.D.

That is so sad, but sometimes people just can't live without their loved ones.

My father's aunt died suddenly and her husband died later the same day (both unexpected from what I remember).
