I have been in steady employment since 1982 but that may possibly change. I feel very insecure about the future and feel that I have nothing to offer in today's world. Has anyone else been in this situation and have any advice as to how to deal with a change in career. Thanks

Take some time to do something you've always wanted to try, this could lead to a new 'career'.what skills have you got, write them down, surprising what skills you have that youtake for granted
I had my own business selling cleaning equipment, went bust, did a kitchen fitting course plus carpentry and did really well for a while then had the recession, (1990's), lost our house, tried to get back into selling but considered 'too old', then got a job as a school caretaker, with a house, regular income, not half the stress of selling or meeting kitchen fitting deadlines and finished the last 17 years of my working life there before retiring 3 years ago. All this time I had a wife and three daughters to support.
So I would say, go for it. Whatever you want. There is nothing to lose and EVERYONE has something to offer someone in this life.
Will think of you Aytee.
If an employer has seen fit to retain you for that length of time then you must have something to offer. Be positive.
If you've been in steady employment since 1982, then like Duncer says you must have something about you.

Are you concerned because the company you work for is struggling? If you need to rethink, then what skills have you gained during your working life that you might be able to offer another employer? Or do you have talents related to hobbies that you could use - I'm thinking of things like gardening or carpentry? Or is there anything that you've always wanted to do jobwise? Like others are saying - be positive.

A friend's husband lost his job last year and he now earns a small but just about adequate income as a professional dog walker and pet sitter. He used to be in sales and marketing, so this was a real change for him, particularly in terms of money, but he loves animals, so in many ways it's the perfect job. Just an example of how things can work out. Let us know how things go.
