We have just got back from holiday and the following email was in my inbox. I have rung my credit card provider and they have confirmed that no such transaction has occurred

I have not opened the attachment.

What benefit can the scammer get from this?

Probably wants you to confirm your credit card details. Just trash it.
I suspect it's been sent to the wrong e-mail address by mistake rather than a scam. It would be easy to put [email protected] instead of [email protected].
Can't see any way a scammer could make money from this.
I've had a couple of emails like that in the past few days, though mine claim to be from Delta Air Lines. I deleted them immediately.

I don't know for sure what benefit they get. I assume that there's a way they can access people's computers if the attachment is opened.

Thank you both
I wouldn't risk responding to it to tell them it's not yours, just in case it is a scam - responding tells them you have a live email. Just bin it. If it was intended for someone else, they can get in touch with the airline themselves.
it has an attachment, the attachment is where the mischief lies...dont open it and delete the email.
