I have seen this particular insurance advert on a number of occasions and I have often wondered how long it would be before it attracted complaints, well true to form it has happened.

Much as they wish to cover it up I am convinced that it is the jolly large black woman (jolly in the term of happy) that I think most are showing concern about.

/// and that it is offensive in stereotyping on religious and race grounds. ///

I still can't understand where the religious aspect comes in though.

But thank goodness common sense has prevailed and we can continue to enjoy a rather enjoyable cartoon even if it comes in the form of an advert.

What are other's views on this?

I am not personally offended, but i am not black, so any racial offence would not be seen by me directly.

As for offence based on stereotypes, I hardly see any ads. these days because most of my viewing is pre-recorded, and ads are whisked through at speed.

I would suggest it appears to be a degree of over-reaction, but everyone has a right to be offended.
Butterfly McQueen was the ditsy maid.
It would be more offensive if everyone in the advert were all white. I don't see a problem with it.

..except the fact that it's on every other ad break.
lots more things to get your knickers in a twist over, or bra, or whatever you have on..
I suspect this particular character has been unemployed since the Um Bongo ads ended, andy. She must be pleased to find there is still work for stereotypes.

I didn't spot any religious stereotyping, aog, but the short person of whom you speak is in fact the Ed - note the pointy hat from his avatar.
Really?

Snore....zzzzzzzz

thanks for disturbing a good afternoon nap, AOG!
jno, if it helps, there's a skinny black man in it - and a fat white man.

I agree with Baldric who could not have put it more succinctly. It's a cartoon for Gawd's sake! Get over it.
I can't see them on my screen naomi but I will take your word for it. Why are cartoons different from other forms of expression? If something is racist, why should being a cartoon exempt it?
I adore how Daily Mail have included the advert, just in case you missed the opportunity to get offended while its on telly- priceless! ;-)
Interesting question jno

suppose by definition, most cartoons are already a caricature
The advert only offends my ears.
jno, third picture down – skinny black guy on the right standing by the blue car – and to the left of the picture, fat white guy standing by tree – oh and there’s another fat white man standing by the coconut shy too.

Actually, I don’t object to the cartoon, but I do object to people who look for a racism in everything. That serves only to create racism. Seeing that poor dog on the ‘ring the bell’ contraption, I’m surprised no one has complained about animal cruelty too. Load of silly nonsense!
The dogs OK naomi, someone's thoughtfully provided him with a hard-hat!
Haaa!
If you look hard enough there's a gnome in there with a red hat and a white beard - as a clean-shaven gnome myself I find this kind of stereotyping offensive.

There's always going to be a few idiots who find something offensive in just about everything. Happily the ASA has ignored them.
I don't find it offensive. But nothing much offends me.
I would like to point out that the Daily Mail on the other hand does tend to offend me. I think it's ridiculous!
I'm more interested in the tune on the Microsoft ad before the ad in question. Anyone know what it is?

/// ps advert does not affend I go to the loo ,put kettle on etc in commercial break ///

Blimey, judging by the number of commercial breaks, the reason you are going to the loo is all that tea/coffee you are drinking. :0)
