It's the clothes that are the wrong shape, not our bodies!!!! Yes, we already knew that, but according to research carried out by North Carolina State University, it's now official.
The four new sizes are:
The rectangle- 'where bust and hips are almost the same circumference and the waist is less than 9in smaller than the bust.'
The spoon-'where the hips are larger than the bust and the waist is less than 9in smaller than the bust.'
The inverted triangle-'where the bust is larger than the hips and the waist is less than 9in smaller than the bust.'
The hourglass-'where the bust and hips are basically the same size with the waist being more than 9in smaller than the bust.'
I am now an inverted triangle and no longer have to make comments about 'swimmer's shoulders'. Which one best represents you?????

I'm an hourglass and it's a nightmare buying clothes. Most shops seem to think women are shaped like boys with waists the same width as their hips.
I qualify for the description of THE SPOON. not very flattering is it? I always thought the hourglass was considered to be the perfect shape.
im an hourglass too, cant get a dress that compliments my waist without mking my belly stick out and making me look preggers but i think i look good in what i wear and make the most of my shape
just a reply to Maggie, i think the hourglass is a lovely shape but some clothes stores tend to think that women dont have belly and are stick thin so dont stock clothes that flatter all shapes

I suppose the rectangle is the nearest I can get,I have the added complication of being vertically challenged!!!!

Not sure I like all this new terminology ,but I suppose that it must have kept someone in a job working it all out! I guess the terminology will become politically correct and used in the fashion trade.

Well that list is OK but there seems to be at least one shape missing, the PEAR has been left out for sure.

According to the survey, fewer than 1 in 10 women have an hourglass figure and that figure falls further with women over a size 12.
One quote says,
'Women have got larger over the years and this means the hourglass is becoming increasingly irrelevent.'
Sorry, hourglass girls, but it looks like buying clothes could get even more difficult for you.
I'm 6' tall, so I understand the problem of buying clothes that fit well and represent the style I want.

Us women we're never happy are we! ; - )

True AliFlump! I always wanted an hourglass figure and hated being so tall. I just wanted to blend in, but it wasn't to be.
im a short arse so i love to be a bit taller, just so my boyfs head is level with mine and i dont have to be on tip toes to kiss him, but then again i never haveto duck under branches
None of these represent me quite honestly Drusilla.I would love to know where they get these facts and figures from.Must be a man who comes up with these weird and wonderful shapes!
I am a couple of inches shorter than you although was taller but have shrunk !! I am big..not fat..big boned ... I have wide hips, small posterior and a medium bust. I must be a triangle
of some sort !! All I know is I can never get trousers or jeans that fit properly without paying a lot of money for them. The inside leg is never long enough .The bums are too baggy.I have got to the stage where if I find something that fits and I like it I buy several. This is probably why I have about thirty pairs of black trousers in my wardrobe !
i am an hourglass and i love my shape!
I love being an hourglass, but it's just such a nightmare buying clothes. I have some dresses that my gran gave me that she wore when she was young and they look fabulous. My waist looks tiny and my bosoms look very impressive! I look dreadful in a lot of dresses in the shops though. They are not shaped around the waist so I just end up looking fat. What annoys me is that no clothes seem to be shaped for the female figure anymore. It's even quite hard to buy a blouse that has darts around the bust, so you either end up with a blouse that is straining at the front or you have to buy something so big it makes you look pregnant.
