When someone asks you to sponser them what would be a reasonable amount nowadays, it's a very good cause children's cancer charity and I don't want to appear mean is it just down to what you feel you can afford?

only pay what you can afford, don;t worry about looking mean, the fact you are giving something is enough. if they have a just giving page donate through that and you can keep your donation private
It depends what it is and how much I can afford.

One of my sisters is doing the london marathon so I just sponsered her £20. Can't really afford to go much more than that. Another sis and her kids are doing a 4 mile run but they only got a tenner. I thought it would be unfair to give them the same as someone running 26 miles.

Thank you I wonder if anyone could explain what the gift aid declaration part of it means
If you are a UK taxpayer then tick the box to select gift aid. Ther goverment then adds on a percentage of whatever you donate (although it is not shown in the total figures).
If its a short to medium distance thing I normally go for £5 plus 25p a mile on top longer distances like marathon cycle rides about £20 and things like sponsored silences etc with small children etc £3-5 but only if I believe its a good cause...otherwise I just say sorry I can't afford it right now

It's a sky dive
If it was friend or family I might give upwards of £5 but as I'm regularly approached by work colleagues to sponsor them in this that or the other it might be only £2 - it all adds up.
It annoys me a bit at work because there is pressure to put the same amount down as the line above you!
EB - but dont tick the gift aid box if you aregoing to be beneath your tax threshold as they calculate that as a debit in such a case.....
