But there are still bottles of water taking up a huge section of my local supermarket.

sure there are Cockney, but an expensive way to wash the car or water the garden I think!..........

I saw in a paper today that this is the worst drought for 124 years.

Can anyone here confirm this grim fact?
yes johnny I heard that too, but only in some areas!......mainly the South East of the country.............
Is it worse than it was in 1976?
I think they said so larhelmet, but as I said, only in some areas............
I thought 76 was the hottest summer.
uuuum, true, but maybe the Winter before was very wet too!..........
I'm using the hosepipe here to wash all my dog's #twos from the garden. The wee fella asked me why I was making the garden wetter. Hardly stopped raining here (Ireland) since 2006.
I wasn't living here in 76 but weren't you supposed to have a bath in the water you'd just washed the dishes in or something gross?
Hot summer = virtually no rain = drought. I fink.
Reservoirs in the SW are all but full........its an issue of logisitics and Cameron/Osbourne would be far better to consider investment in piping (not to Scotland - let them soak in their own pee) to the NW, Wales and down here.....

What could come on the table again is the controversial building of the massive reservoir in Oxfordshire near Steventon/Didcot/Abingdon and a couple of others, in Yorks and Cambridgeshire I think......
lardhelmet, not sure about that, there was a shortage in Southern England then as I remember, but in Wales we were fine!.......
The drought currently beginning in the SE may be the severest since records began, (still to be confirmed by the Met Office), however the "Great Drought" of 1976 has been fully discussed, as per groundwater drought, i.e normal means of water catchment in the SE.

The actual total rainfall across the UK re 2011-2012 vis 1975-1976 is as shown in the link below:

I was only a toddler in 76. I don't know how long the hot spell lasted for.

It's been a dry couple of years...
We still talking weather or your sex life ummmm?
Could we all do a rain dance? I understand that there are such things in the Third World. Would this work for us in this country, I wonder?
Plenty of water up here in Scotland, maybe we could pipe some down south - for a small price of course lol.
Never mind water rates on the up to pay for new resevoirs never mind they sold the old ones for housing
It may not be a hot dry summer of course and then it hopefully wont get any worse. I am still squelching about in my garden so anyone is welcome to come and help themselves for free!
