It's a little odd at first, Ed...
It's basically windows7 with the start menu removed and replaced by the metro UI with the tiles ala windows phone 7...
When you are in desktop mode it really doesn't look or act much different to windows7 apart from finding a few of the more advanced features is a little different and the start button has gone and is replaced by a "hot corner" in the same place that brings up the metro UI... when it's in metro mode it's pretty obvious it orientated towards the tablet market with the tiles for the apps and installed programs but it is usable with a mouse.
overall, It's usable, but I can see some people will struggle with it (the same ones that struggled with the change from XP to 7) and keeping the metro UI start menu in order is probably going to be quite a high priority once a few programs have been installed otherwise it will start to get messy very quickly.

If mac os mountain lion were a windows product it would be an SP given out for free, to fix/improve lion.
As for Win 8 consumer, the hackers tweakers and modders etc will have a field day, just like all the other MS releases, in producing software/apps to make it look and work just like any other previous version of windows.
you want a start button in the bottom left hand corner , dont worry youll soon get it, you want a power off button without having to search for it, dont worry theyll fix it.
MS want uniformity across all its platforms, tablets, phones,notebooks etc hence the look of and operability of Win8

I can't see the point of re-enabling the old style start menu anyhow, it's like when people used to run progman on windows 95 so it looked an acted like windows 3.1
If you want your OS to look exactly the same as the previous version then don't bother upgrading and if you're going to upgrade you may as well get used to the newer style because you can bet it's not going to go away and you'll get to a point where you really won't have the choice.

depends on your point of view, cosmetic change is hardly much good to power users, but then I dont suppose MS is worried about them so much, they want sales numbers and thats jo public.
One day MS and Apple will give people what they want rather than what they think you want and tell you you want, until then the modders, hackers,tweakers etc will have a field day in providing a service which is used and a godsend to millions
