It's not uncommon for someone to build up a Company, make it a success, take a back-seat and let the offspring run it into the ground.
What, like Henry Ford?
There are successes, but I reckon the parents have done a better job in raising their offspring.
I confess, I am basing assessment on his appearance before the Select Committee.

He was evasive, untruthful and not very convincing.
He's not dumb.....but doesn't speak convincingly.!! It's my guess that he wouldn't be where he is, if his father wasn't who he is.

Ron.
When your father's a billionairre he can lie down and chew the cud.
Appointed by his Father , didn't have to work his way up, simply out of his depth.
James Murdoch didn't run it into the ground. There was a culture whithin NI that thought they could get away with anything, the more that comes out the more I think is being hidden.

Murdochs resignation has everything to do with the shareholders and the Murdochs control of the board rather than any public outrage.

The excuses will be couched in contrite terms and gilded to make it look like a sacrifice but trust me they are trying to head of trouble in the US.
Rupert is back in charge and launching newspapers; so who needs the monkey when they can get the organ-grinder?
Wonder if anything detrimental is coming out with the Leveson inquiry going on?
anything detrimental?

NoW accused of colluding with murder suspects

Sun established 'network of corrupted officials

Met failed to tell MP of extent of phone hacking commissioning

News International accused of email deletion policy

phone hacking may be worst corporate corruption case for 250 years

News of the World 'may have paid £850,000' to Glenn Mulcaire

Rebekah Brooks 'had her phone hacked twice a week'

All just allegations, but that's just the last few days. Has there been anything NOT detrimental?
He denied them all, as you said jno alleged, I was thinking on the lines of facts proved.
nothing will be 'proved' till the inquiry is over, whenever that may be. But the allegations seem pretty detailed, and all James has said so far is "Nobody told me!" Great chairman!
And probably like me jno always believed ignorance was no defence in the law.
