I am not a big film buff. So why did the silent black and white movie get so many awards. Is this 1920 or 2012 or am I missing something.

Yes, Helen Mirren (did I spell Helen's surname wrong?) lost her shoe.
It was Meryl Streep that lost her shoe. I really want to see The Artist and have been since it first came out.
And me erin; it's not been in at the cinema in our town yet so am still hoping they will get it at somepoint!

So I am missing something then? Pray tell WHAT.
different maybe
A flashback to a simpler time, no effects but beautiful cinematography, music amd skilled actors...
A mixture between Gene Kelly and Clark Gable if the trailers are anything to go by.
micmak, if had been awake at the time of your post would have mentioned that it is a wonderful film, fantastic acting, and it's not all silent, the music score is brilliant, and it's my favourite film in a very long time. It has nothing at all to do with being back in the the days of silent films, it's a love story between the two leads, and a love letter to the golden days of cinema. A gem
em10, that was a beautiful description and makes me want to go to see it. Thanks.
The Artist is the best film I've seen for ages. I suggest you go and watch it, micmak

Bug**r, just checked and it's on in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow but NOT Dundee. Aaaarrrrgggghhhhh!! Have car will travel!
Maybe Transformers 3 should have won since that has plenty of loud noises, is in colour and is present day - thus clearly a better film than The Artist.
oops my mistake, shows how much I was interested in the programme, well
I shall not be going to the cinema as I am not a film buff, last time I was at
the cinema was 1966.
been planning on watching the artist for ages, we're going on wednesday, just hope the new found hype won't mean it's chocker!
We're watching the Muppets after that!
And that was to see "Gone With The Wind" ^
anyone else notice that the red haired actress from Drive (I think it was) was sitting with the geek forensic scientist from body of proof?
Wasn't Stephen Fry amazing though?
No, it was something Mary Poppins.
dotty, that's Christina Henricks, one of my favourite on screen sights!!
