if you picked it up fromt he water, how did he pay for it?
was is some tourist thing? you pick your own pearl...?

if so may be a fake... the chances of just picking up a shell and there being a pearl inside is slim ... you'd have to prise open the shell and remove the animal and look inside...
You can get a pearl necklace for a tenner (so I'm told) in Soho, so based on that, a single pearl would be worth around 50p.
Tinkerbell, you've cast pearls before swine here, I think.
take it to a jeweller, see if they want to buy it - they will tell you if its fake
If you paid to pick it out of the water, it's probably worth very little indeed. Let a jeweller have a look at it.
A real pearl will feel rough if you run it across your teeth. Fake are smooth. It is more than likely cultured pearl, (they insert a grain of sand into it, to irritate and cause it to produce nacre).
Cultured are the ones they pop in tanks at holiday places and cruise ships. You then "fish" for your own pearl.
Meant to add, the preal will be worth under the price you paid to pick it.
