elami

Sorry patch49, that might not be right. I worked it out from the clue:

One man = IMAL (reverses) and E is the first line note in the treble clef. I thought ELAMI was a musical term but now I cannot find it in the dictionary, although I am sure I have seen it somewhere before.

It is ELAMI. It is 'one male' backwards (reverses) and the word means the note E as sung in one of the Hexachords.
I should perhaps have written the word 'one' above as the digit 1, standard for the letter 'I'. Also, the basis of the word 'elami' is the notes 'la' and 'mi'...ie it is the 'E' sounded as 'la' or 'mi'.

Thank you Quizmonster -elami was my first thought and then when I started to stir up the sawdust I began to have doubts, although I am certain I have come across it before in crosswords.

Coincidentally, this also appears in today's AZED (30 down), with a more elegant and sophisticated clue, in my view...
Not that much of a coincidence mischka - the two puzzles are over 5 years apart !!
