I was driving through Dorset the other day and nearly crashed the car laughing after I saw a sign for a town called Piddletrenthide. How on earth did a name like that come about?

In Old English, pidele was a name for marshland or similar. Piddle trent hide means 'estate on the River Piddle assessed at thirty hides (trente hides)'. (Source: Oxford Dictionary of English Place-Names. I don't think there's an online version).
