Would like some help please with the final clue. Think I know the answer but unsure of the final form of the word to use.

12a. Nth American dense vegetation consiting chiefly of tangled shrubs and thorny bushes. Spanish for 'dwarf evergreen oak'

9 letters: c - a - - r - - l

The word is Chaparro but not sure how this links with the L from Ptolomy, which I'm sure is correct. Is it Chaparrol or something similar?

Thanks to Emeritus and Baitress. I thought it was something like that - remember the High Chapparal series on TV? Thanks also Baitress for the spelling correction - that would have disqualified it if I was fortunate to be drawn out the hat!
